BECKETT SPORTS CARD HOT / COLD – JULY 8, 2022

[Beckett]

Welcome to another edition of Beckett Sports Card Hot/Cold where we take a fun and quick look at what’s hot and what’s not in the worlds of sports cards and sports.

It has been a bit of an up and down year so far for baseball’s rookie class. Injuries and adjustments have slow momentum for Spencer Torkelson and, even to a certain extent, Wander Franco. Bobby Witt Jr. has turned things around of late. But the big thing at the moment is Seattle’s Julio Rodriguez.

Winner of back-to-back American League Rookie of the Month honors, Rodriguez is already proving to be one of baseball’s toolsiest player. If he keeps up his current pace, he’ll easily become a member of the 30/30 Club for home runs and stolen bases. 40/40 might be a stretch, but it’s not out of the question.

Spoiler alert for next week’s Hot/Cold — 2021-22 Panini Prizm Basketball will likely be in the top spot. It has just arrived for the masses but the traditional excitement and early-arriving 1st Off the Line boxes have it on this week’s list. This year, base cards will have nearly 50 different parallels once all the different configurations have released.

With NBA Summer League action underway, many collectors are getting their first look at the incoming rookie class. Chet Holmgren is the early standout. The big man is showing some of the finesse already that could make him a standout in a hurry. A deal with Topps means there are several cards out there already, although his first NBA cards are still a ways off.
