Predictions, Matchups & Picks

The WNBA playoffs shift locations tonight, and suddenly the pressure belongs to the higher seeds.

Two Game 1 blowouts created two elimination games: Las Vegas leads Indiana 1–0 after a 102–85 victory, while New York leads Minnesota 1–0 after beating the Lynx 91–75. Because the first round uses a best-of-three 1-1-1 format, both Indiana and New York host tonight. (NBC Sports)

But should bettors expect Game 1 to repeat itself?

Not necessarily.

Tonight’s BuckBully projections are built around the Game 1 results, season matchups, injuries, home-court shift and the adjustments each team can make in Game 2.

LAS VEGAS ACES AT INDIANA FEVER

Game 1: Aces 102, Fever 85

A’ja Wilson immediately reminded everyone why Las Vegas remains dangerous in October.

Wilson exploded for 38 points and 16 rebounds, leading an Aces offense that hung 102 points on Indiana. (WNBA)

But Game 2 presents a considerably different situation.

The Season Series Tells a Different Story

Las Vegas’ 17-point Game 1 win makes the matchup look one-sided. The full-season results don’t.

Indiana defeated Las Vegas 84–68 on July 5 and absolutely crushed the Aces 109–75 on July 12. Las Vegas responded with an 86–84 overtime victory on August 6 before Sunday’s 102–85 playoff win. (WNBA)

That pattern is important.

Indiana has already demonstrated that its offense can hurt Las Vegas, particularly when the Fever dictate tempo and don’t allow Wilson to dominate every possession.

THE BIG QUESTION: HOW DOES INDIANA DEFEND A’JA?

Stopping Wilson completely isn’t realistic.

Indiana instead needs to prevent another 38-point takeover.

That means showing help earlier, making Wilson give up the basketball and living with Las Vegas’ secondary scorers taking more shots.

The danger is obvious: overcommit to Wilson and Las Vegas can punish Indiana from the perimeter.

But allowing her to repeatedly operate one-on-one isn’t much of an alternative after Game 1.

CAITLIN CLARK FACTOR

Clark enters Game 2 listed probable with a back issue, while Aliyah Boston is also reportedly probable with a lower-leg injury. Damiris Dantas and Tyasha Harris are out. (The Times of India)

Clark finished Game 1 with 15 points and 10 assists. (The Times of India)

Indiana probably needs more scoring from her tonight.

The Fever are at their most dangerous when Clark is simultaneously creating for teammates and forcing defenses to respect her own scoring range.

If she’s primarily functioning as a distributor, Las Vegas can remain more comfortable defensively.

What Indiana Needs

Clark attacking.

Boston establishing herself inside.

Fewer empty possessions.

And most importantly: don’t let Wilson control the glass.

Las Vegas’ advantage becomes considerably larger when Wilson generates second-chance opportunities.

THE HOME-COURT SWING

Here’s where this game gets interesting.

Game 1 was in Las Vegas.

Game 2 moves to Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The betting market reflects how close this matchup could be: Indiana was around a 1.5-point favorite, with a total around 183.5 in available Monday markets. (TheMoneyBaller)

That’s effectively the market saying: forget the 17-point Game 1 margin — Game 2 could be a possession game.

BuckBully agrees.

BUCKBULLY PROJECTION

FEVER 94 — ACES 91

🔥 PICK: INDIANA FEVER ML

🔥 LEAN: FEVER -1.5

🔥 TOTAL: OVER 183.5 — slight lean

Indiana has already beaten Las Vegas twice this season and returns home facing elimination.

The Fever don’t need to solve Wilson completely.

They need to make her work harder for 30 while getting considerably more offensive production from Clark and the supporting cast.

PLAYER PROP WATCH

Caitlin Clark — Assists Over

Las Vegas’ attention on Clark should continue creating passing opportunities.

A’ja Wilson — Points Over consideration

There isn’t much evidence from Game 1 suggesting Indiana suddenly has an easy defensive answer.

Aliyah Boston — Rebounds Over consideration

Indiana desperately needs additional work on the glass after Wilson’s Game 1 dominance.

MINNESOTA LYNX AT NEW YORK LIBERTY

Game 1: Liberty 91, Lynx 75

This is arguably tonight’s most fascinating matchup.

Minnesota didn’t simply lose Game 1.

The No. 1-seeded Lynx, who finished the regular season 33–11, were beaten by 16 points. (WNBA)

And Breanna Stewart was the biggest reason.

STEWART TOOK OVER

Stewart dropped 34 points in New York’s Game 1 victory. (WNBA)

Now Minnesota faces an unusual situation:

The league’s top seed must win on New York’s floor simply to keep its season alive.

That’s where this matchup becomes complicated.

CAN MINNESOTA RESPOND?

There’s a strong temptation to overreact to Game 1.

Minnesota’s regular-season body of work says not to.

A 33-win team doesn’t suddenly become incapable of making adjustments because of one poor postseason performance.

Minnesota’s first objective has to be disrupting Stewart’s rhythm.

New York can’t be allowed to repeatedly get Stewart into comfortable scoring situations.

Expect Minnesota to vary its coverage, send additional help and force other Liberty players to beat them.

But there’s a catch.

New York is playing at home.

And Minnesota’s adjustments could create open perimeter opportunities elsewhere.

THE PACE BATTLE

Game 1 produced 166 combined points.

Minnesota probably doesn’t want Game 2 turning into a track meet.

The Lynx’s preferred path is more controlled:

Defend.

Rebound.

Limit turnovers.

Execute in the half court.

Make New York score against a set defense.

The longer Game 2 remains a one-possession contest, the more pressure shifts toward the Liberty trying to close out the No. 1 seed.

HISTORICAL/PATTERN ANGLE

This isn’t simply about “revenge.”

It’s about regression.

New York won Game 1 by 16 behind a 34-point Stewart performance. Minnesota’s season-long results were considerably stronger than what it displayed Sunday.

That creates two competing trends:

Minnesota bounce-back: The league’s No. 1 seed should be expected to make significant tactical adjustments.

New York home-court advantage: The Liberty already stole the road game they needed and now get an opportunity to eliminate Minnesota in Brooklyn.

That’s why the side is much tougher than the Game 1 scoreboard suggests.

BUCKBULLY PROJECTION

LYNX 84 — LIBERTY 82

🔥 PICK: MINNESOTA ML

🔥 SAFER ANGLE: MINNESOTA + POINTS if available

🔥 TOTAL: UNDER — lean

One current market had Minnesota around -157 on the moneyline, despite playing in New York, which illustrates how strongly the market still respects the Lynx after Game 1. (Covers.com)

BuckBully sees a much tighter game.

Minnesota survives.

Barely.

PLAYER PROP WATCH

Breanna Stewart — 25+ points

Expect Minnesota to devote considerably more defensive attention to her, so repeating 34 isn’t something we’d automatically project. But Stewart remains New York’s primary offensive weapon.

Stewart — Rebounds

Extra defensive attention doesn’t eliminate her ability to impact the glass.

Minnesota leading scorer — Points Over consideration

Someone has to provide the offensive response if the Lynx are going to force Game 3.

⭐ PICK OF THE NIGHT

INDIANA FEVER ML

The 102–85 Game 1 score may actually help create the opportunity.

Indiana has already defeated Las Vegas twice this season, including by 16 and 34 points, and now gets the elimination game at home. (WNBA)

Las Vegas absolutely deserves respect after Game 1 — particularly with Wilson playing at an elite level — but this matchup has been much more competitive across the full season than Sunday’s score suggests.

🎯 PLAYER PROP BOARD

Caitlin Clark — Assists Over

A’ja Wilson — Points Over consideration

Aliyah Boston — Rebounds Over consideration

Breanna Stewart — 25+ Points

Prop lines can move considerably during the day, so the number matters. A good player angle can become a bad bet when the market moves several points.

FINAL CALL

Game 1 belonged to the favorites.

Game 2 could belong to the adjustments.

Indiana has already shown it can beat Las Vegas and now returns home with its season on the line. Minnesota has 44 regular-season games of evidence telling us the No. 1 seed is better than the team that showed up Sunday.

BuckBully predicts both series continue.
