Predictions, Injuries, Fantasy Picks & a BuckBully 3-Leg Parlay ππ
Thursday Night Football is going international.
The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams open their 2026 seasons tonight from the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia β the first NFL regular-season game ever played in Australia. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:35 p.m. ET / 7:35 p.m. CT, streaming on Netflix. (Turf Show Times)
And this isn’t some throwaway international matchup. It’s an NFC West rivalry between two teams with legitimate postseason expectations β with travel, injuries and some major offseason additions making this one especially difficult to handicap.
THE BIG STORY: WHO HANDLED AUSTRALIA BETTER? π¦πΊ
San Francisco may have an unusual advantage before the football is even kicked.
The 49ers arrived in Australia nearly a week early to acclimate. The Rams stayed on their normal U.S. schedule and didn’t arrive in Melbourne until Thursday local time, barely more than a day before the Friday-morning Australian kickoff. Los Angeles deliberately chose that strategy after studying travel and sleep patterns, but it’s a fascinating experiment. (Reuters)
That’s roughly a 13,000-kilometer trip for Los Angeles.
Will the Rams’ superior roster overcome jet lag?
Or did Kyle Shanahan steal an edge by getting San Francisco there early?
That’s probably tonight’s biggest wild card.
INJURY REPORT π₯
The biggest news for San Francisco is encouraging.
Nick Bosa is expected to play after returning from the ACL injury that ended his 2025 season. George Kittle has also been working his way back and was limited in practice. The official NFL injury report additionally listed Alfred Collins as a non-participant and several 49ersβincluding Dre Greenlaw, Renardo Green and Kyle Juszczykβas limited. (NFL)
Los Angeles enters in considerably cleaner shape. Myles Garrett, Puka Nacua, Alaric Jackson and Tyler Higbee are available/full participants on the latest report. (NFL)
But there’s one enormous name missing:
Aaron Donald is OUT.
Donald recently came out of retirement, but the Rams left him home to continue preparing rather than sending him to Australia. San Francisco’s offensive line certainly won’t complain about that decision. (San Francisco Chronicle)
THE NEW-LOOK RAMS ARE LOADED π
The Rams aren’t subtle about what they’re trying to do.
Matthew Stafford is coming off an MVP season in which he threw for an NFL-best 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns. Los Angeles added reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett to a defense that was already dangerous, while Stafford still has an offense featuring Puka Nacua, Davante Adams and Kyren Williams. (NBC Sports)
Nacua is coming off a ridiculous 129-catch, 1,715-yard season. (Reuters)
The Rams look built for February.
San Francisco gets the first chance to find the cracks.
TONIGHT’S ODDS π°
As of this morning, DraftKings had Los Angeles at approximately:
Rams -3.5
49ers +3.5
Rams ML -198
49ers ML +164
Over/Under 48.5
FanDuel was in the same neighborhood at Rams -3.5 with a 48.5 total, although prices vary by sportsbook and can move throughout the day. (NBC Sports)
Here’s what catches my attention:
The spread has essentially held at 3.5, while FanDuel’s total moved from an opening 49.5 down to 48.5. (FanDuel)
That suggests at least some skepticism about an offensive shootout.
π BUCKBULLY 3-LEG PARLAY
Rather than simply stacking three Rams bets, I’d attack three different parts of the matchup:
Christian McCaffrey 5+ receptions
Kyren Williams 50+ rushing yards
Rams moneyline

Why?
McCaffrey should remain Brock Purdy’s pressure-release valve against a Rams defense featuring Garrett. One projection has McCaffrey around 5.9 catches, while his standard reception prop has been sitting around 4.5. (DraftEdge)
Williams’ standard rushing line has been around 55.5 yards, with projections around 67. The Rams also have reason to establish the run rather than forcing Stafford to throw 45 times immediately after that unusual travel schedule. (DraftEdge)
And ultimately, I’m taking Los Angeles to win.

FANTASY FOOTBALL WATCH π
Christian McCaffrey β RB1: Start him. One projection has him around 67 rushing + 54 receiving yards with nearly six catches. That’s roughly 120 scrimmage yards before touchdowns are even considered. (DraftEdge)
Puka Nacua β WR1: Another automatic start. His receiving line is around 91.5 yards, with one projection north of 100. (DraftEdge)
Matthew Stafford β QB1/strong starter: The reigning MVP gets a San Francisco defense with Bosa returning from major knee surgery. Stafford’s passing-yard market has hovered around 265.5. (DraftEdge)
Kyren Williams β RB1/RB2: Start. San Francisco has seen enough of him already: Williams scored four touchdowns in their two meetings last season. (RotoBaller)
Davante Adams β WR2: Touchdown upside remains enormous after he scored 14 TDs in 2025. (RotoBaller)
George Kittle β TE: Normally automatic, but monitor his status right up to kickoff given his return from injury. (Reuters)
HISTORY SAYS DON’T EXPECT A WALKOVER π
These teams have been beating each other up since 1950.
San Francisco holds the all-time series advantage at 79-72-3, but the recent picture has shifted. Under Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay, the 49ers lead 11-8, yet Los Angeles has won four of the last five meetings. (Turf Show Times)
Over the past three regular seasons, though?
Rams 3. 49ers 3.
Perfectly even.
Their most recent meeting wasn’t: Los Angeles hammered San Francisco 42-26 in Week 10 last season. (Turf Show Times)
That’s the beauty of this rivalry. Trends don’t stay trends for very long.
THREE THINGS THAT DECIDE TONIGHT π
The first is Garrett vs. Purdy. Aaron Donald isn’t playing, but adding Garrett gives Los Angeles another elite pass-rushing nightmare. If San Francisco has to constantly help in protection, it shrinks Shanahan’s playbook.
Second is McCaffrey as a receiver. The Rams don’t necessarily have to stop him; they have to prevent a six-yard checkdown from becoming 25.
And third is the strangest matchup of all:
Rams vs. their own body clocks.
At 10:35 Friday morning Melbourne time, we’ll find out whether Los Angeles’ unconventional travel strategy was sports scienceβor overthinking.
BUCKBULLY PREDICTED SCORE π
I think San Francisco’s early arrival keeps this closer than the talent disparity suggests.
The 49ers establish McCaffrey early. Purdy gets the ball out quickly. Stafford and Puka eventually start attacking San Francisco’s secondary, and Kyren Williams becomes increasingly important in the second half.
San Francisco has an opportunity late.
Stafford closes it.
RAMS 27 β 49ERS 23
That gives us a Rams win, but a 49ers +3.5 loss by half a pointβexactly the kind of finish that makes divisional betting dangerous.
BuckBully picks: Rams ML π | 49ers +3.5 slight lean | Under 48.5 slight lean | McCaffrey 5+ catches π | Kyren 50+ rushing π
THE BUCKBULLY TAKE
Tonight isn’t simply the first Thursday night game of the season.
It’s the NFL’s first trip to Australia. It’s Shanahan vs. McVay. Purdy vs. Stafford. McCaffrey against a rebuilt Rams defense. Garrett’s Los Angeles debut. Bosa’s return.
And before either team has played a snap, somebody is leaving Melbourne 0-1 inside the NFC West.
That’s a lot riding on one very long flight.
Watch the matchup. Follow the trends. Trust the numbersβbut respect the unexpected.
