Bitcoin Slides as XRP Pulls Back After Explosive Run
The crypto market has suddenly flipped red.
After an impressive rebound that pushed Bitcoin back toward $87,000 and sent XRP soaring above $1.60, sellers have stepped back in.
At the time of this update, the overall crypto market is down roughly 3.99%, while Bitcoin is down about 2.62% and XRP has fallen approximately 4.56%, according to the latest market readings.
So what happened?
The bigger story may not be that crypto is crashing, but that the market is giving back part of a very fast rally while investors once again confront higher interest rates, elevated bond yields and a stronger U.S. dollar.
Bitcoin Gets Rejected Near $87K
Bitcoin entered Wednesday with serious momentum.
BTC had climbed from around $75,000 last week to briefly challenge the $87,000-$87,300 area, representing a double-digit rebound in a matter of days.
But Bitcoin couldn’t hold those highs.
Selling intensified after BTC approached Monday’s high near $87,300, pushing Bitcoin back toward the mid-$84,000 range during Wednesday’s U.S. trading session.
CoinDesk reported that higher rates and dollar strength were once again pressuring the market as the earlier crypto rally lost momentum. (CoinDesk)
That makes the latest decline important—but it needs context.
Even after today’s pullback, Bitcoin remains substantially above the levels it traded at just a week ago.
📉 Why Is Crypto Falling Today?
There doesn’t appear to be one single crypto-specific event responsible for the reversal.
Instead, several pressures are hitting at the same time.
Higher interest rates: The Federal Reserve raised rates last week, and investors are still adjusting to the possibility that monetary policy could remain tighter for longer.
Treasury yields: Higher government bond yields can make speculative assets less attractive because investors can earn greater returns from traditionally safer assets.
Strong dollar: A stronger U.S. dollar can create another headwind for Bitcoin and other risk assets.
Profit-taking: Bitcoin and many altcoins rallied extremely quickly over the past week. After that kind of move, traders taking profits shouldn’t be surprising.
Most importantly, Bitcoin reached an obvious technical and psychological resistance zone around $87,000-$90,000 and failed to break through it.
That doesn’t necessarily end the rally.
But it does show that the bulls haven’t won the battle yet.
🚀➡️📉 XRP’s Huge Rally Finally Cools
XRP’s reversal is even more dramatic.
Earlier Wednesday, XRP traded above $1.60 after a spectacular run that briefly pushed its market capitalization above $100 billion.
At one point, XRP was up more than 20% over seven days.
Now XRP is experiencing exactly what often happens after a rapid crypto breakout: volatility in both directions.
With XRP currently down roughly 4.56%, traders are watching whether the decline becomes a normal pullback or starts erasing a larger portion of the recent breakout.
That distinction matters.
XRP falling 4%-5% after climbing more than 20% over the previous week tells a very different story than XRP falling 5% after weeks of weakness.
For now, this looks like a major test of the rally.
👀 XRP Levels Worth Watching
The first battle is around $1.50-$1.55.
If XRP can stabilize around that region, the recent breakout remains largely intact.
The next upside obstacle remains approximately $1.65-$1.66, where XRP encountered resistance during its latest surge.
And then there is the big psychological target:
$2.00 XRP.
Before talking seriously about $2, however, XRP needs to prove it can absorb profit-taking and establish support following its explosive run.
That’s what makes the next few trading sessions so important.
₿ Bitcoin’s Bigger Picture Isn’t Dead Yet
Today’s decline also shouldn’t erase what Bitcoin accomplished over the previous week.
Bitcoin is still on pace for something extremely unusual.
BTC posted gains in both July and August, and despite today’s decline, September remains positive. If September finishes green, Bitcoin would record its first positive July-August-September streak since 2012. (CoinDesk)
That’s impressive—but 2012 shouldn’t be treated as a roadmap for what happens next.
Today’s Bitcoin market includes ETFs, institutional investors, derivatives and much greater sensitivity to global interest rates and liquidity.
There is another encouraging signal: institutional money hasn’t completely disappeared.
Bitcoin ETFs reportedly attracted nearly $1 billion in net inflows Monday alone and approximately $1.59 billion across three trading sessions, even as Bitcoin struggled to push through the $90,000 area. (The Wall Street Journal)
That’s something worth watching during this pullback.
🐂 What Bulls Want to See
Bitcoin doesn’t necessarily need to immediately return to $87,000.
What bulls need is for this decline to remain a pullback rather than a breakdown.
BTC establishing support after its recent double-digit rally would show buyers are willing to step back in at lower prices.
For XRP, holding around the $1.50 region after its enormous weekly move would similarly suggest the breakout hasn’t completely lost momentum.
Then attention could return to:
Bitcoin: $87K → $90K
XRP: $1.65-$1.66 → $2.00
But losing recently reclaimed support could turn the market’s attention back toward lower levels very quickly.

This is exactly why chasing green candles in crypto can be dangerous.
Yesterday’s breakout can become today’s selloff in a matter of hours.
But today’s red candles don’t automatically mean the entire rally is over either.
The better question is:
Where does the market establish its next support?
Bitcoin’s ability to hold its recent gains despite higher interest rates will be important.
XRP may be even more interesting because its rally was much more aggressive. A healthy consolidation following a 20%+ weekly surge would be very different from completely surrendering the breakout.
Bottom Line
The crypto market is down roughly 3.99%.
Bitcoin is down around 2.62%.
XRP is down approximately 4.56%.
Those numbers look ugly on the screen—but context matters.
Bitcoin just experienced a major run from the mid-$70Ks toward $87K, while XRP exploded more than 20% over the previous week and briefly reclaimed a $100 billion market capitalization.
Now comes the real test.
Can Bitcoin turn this pullback into support before making another attempt at $90K?
And can XRP defend its breakout after one of its strongest rallies of the year?
The next move could tell us whether today’s red market is simply traders taking profits—or the beginning of a deeper crypto correction.
