College Football, NHL & WNBA Game 3 Predictions — October 2, 2026
Friday’s sports board gives us a little bit of everything: undefeated ACC teams colliding in Blacksburg, a Big Ten road test for Penn State, the defending FCS champion under the Friday-night lights, a five-game NHL slate, and a winner-take-all WNBA playoff game in San Francisco.
Instead of simply chasing favorites, we’re looking at matchups, injuries, recent production, pace, historical tendencies and the most probable ways each game develops.
All betting lines referenced are snapshots and can change before game time.
🏈 COLLEGE FOOTBALL — WEEK 5
Pittsburgh at Virginia Tech
7:00 PM ET | ESPN | Lane Stadium, Blacksburg
This may be the most interesting college football game of the night.
Both Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech enter 4-0, and both have already shown an ability to defend the run. Pitt running back Ja’Kyrian Turner has been upgraded to probable, while receiver Tony Kinsler is questionable. Virginia Tech receiver Ayden Greene is probable.
The market reflects how close this matchup is, with Virginia Tech sitting around a small home favorite.
Matchup Breakdown
Lane Stadium is an important intangible. A close game becomes much more difficult for a visiting offense when crowd noise begins affecting third downs, protections and communication.
But Pitt shouldn’t have to completely abandon its running game. If the Panthers can stay out of obvious passing situations and prevent Virginia Tech’s defense from dictating the game, this has the ingredients for a fourth-quarter possession game.
Neither team has much reason to turn this into a track meet.
Game leans:
Pittsburgh +3.5
Under 54.5
Prop watch: Ja’Kyrian Turner rushing attempts OVER if his workload line is reasonable.
BuckBully angle: Pitt +3.5 gives us protection in what projects as essentially a one-score game.
Liberty at Delaware
7:00 PM ET | CBS Sports Network | Delaware Stadium
Liberty enters 3-1 against a 2-2 Delaware team coming off a brutal 42-3 loss to Virginia.
The biggest concern for Delaware is quarterback Nick Minicucci. Current reports indicate he is not expected to play because of a knee injury. Backup Braden Streeter struggled badly in relief against Virginia, completing just 2 of 16 passes.
That’s particularly concerning against a Liberty defense that has been difficult to throw against and has yet to surrender a fourth-quarter point through four games.
Liberty is averaging 30.5 points per game while allowing 18.8, compared with Delaware’s 23.3 scored and 24.5 allowed.
Projection
Without its starting quarterback, Delaware could have difficulty sustaining drives. That creates additional possessions and favorable field position for Liberty.
Game leans:
Liberty -7
Full-game UNDER 49.5 — slight lean
Best matchup angle: Liberty moneyline
Penn State at Northwestern
8:00 PM ET | FOX | Evanston, Illinois
Penn State comes into this matchup 3-1 after suffering its first loss of the Matt Campbell era against Wisconsin. Northwestern enters 2-1.
The market opened around Penn State -3, while current numbers have hovered near the field-goal range. The total has been sitting around 46.5, which tells you what kind of football game oddsmakers are anticipating.
This looks more like a field-position game than an offensive shootout.
Penn State should have the deeper roster, but Northwestern’s best route to an upset is slowing the game down, limiting possessions and forcing Penn State to repeatedly execute long drives.
Game leans:
Penn State Moneyline
UNDER 48.5
BuckBully angle: UNDER 48.5.
Montana State at Idaho
10:30 PM ET | ESPN
The defending FCS national champion Montana State enters another major Big Sky spotlight game.
The Bobcats were short-handed last week but still defeated Northern Arizona 28-14, with quarterback Patrick Duchien contributing a passing touchdown and two rushing scores.
Montana State remains somewhat short-handed entering Idaho, making depth one of the more important variables late in the game.
Idaho’s home environment should keep this competitive, but Montana State’s ability to generate offense through the quarterback run game gives the Bobcats another dimension when traditional drives break down.
Game leans:
Montana State moneyline
Montana State team total OVER — line dependent
Player angle: Patrick Duchien rushing yards/anytime rushing TD.
🏒 NHL FRIDAY NIGHT
Early-season NHL handicapping requires some caution. Rosters have changed, samples are extremely small and several teams are still establishing their rotations.
That makes injuries, shot volume, goaltending and special teams more useful than blindly relying on early win-loss records.
New York Rangers at Detroit Red Wings
6:30 PM ET | Little Caesars Arena
Detroit enters opening night without captain Dylan Larkin, who is out with an upper-body injury.
That’s a major offensive absence.
The Rangers went 34-39-9 last season but produced a 24.6% power play, while Detroit allowed 3.1 goals per game.
Detroit is nevertheless around a -135 home favorite with the total near 6.
Without Larkin, that price looks less comfortable.
Game leans:
Rangers +1.5
UNDER 6.5
Player prop watch: Mika Zibanejad shots on goal OVER.
Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes
7:00 PM ET | Lenovo Center
Carolina opened its season with a 1-0 overtime loss to Florida, meaning the Hurricanes generated enough defensive structure to stay alive for nearly 65 minutes despite failing to score.
Carolina is missing Seth Jarvis, while Washington is without Rasmus Sandin.
Sebastian Aho produced four shots in Carolina’s opener without registering a point. That’s exactly the kind of underlying volume worth monitoring rather than reacting only to the zero in the scoring column.
Game leans:
Washington +1.5
UNDER 6.5
Player props:
Sebastian Aho shots OVER
Alex Ovechkin shots OVER
BuckBully angle: Aho shots may offer a cleaner route than laying a large price on Carolina.
Boston Bruins at Winnipeg Jets
8:00 PM ET | Canada Life Centre
Boston won both meetings against Winnipeg last season by a combined 12-4.
Recent shot-volume data also gives us two attractive names.
David Pastrnak’s current shots line has been around 3.5, a number he exceeded in four of his previous five games entering tonight. Kyle Connor’s line has also been around 3.5.
Winnipeg is currently priced as the favorite, with the total around 5.5.
Game leans:
Boston +1.5
UNDER 6 — slight lean
Best player prop: David Pastrnak OVER 3.5 shots on goal.
Secondary: Kyle Connor OVER 3.5 shots.
St. Louis Blues at Dallas Stars
9:00 PM ET | American Airlines Center
Dallas is the strongest market favorite of this matchup, around -210 in current listings.
St. Louis also opens the season without defensemen Tyler Tucker and Logan Mailloux. Mailloux underwent surgery for a broken hand and is expected to miss an extended period.
Dallas has its own major absence with Matt Duchene placed on long-term injured reserve.
Recent meetings have also been low scoring. Dallas beat St. Louis 2-1 twice during preseason, and the current total is sitting around 5.5.
Game leans:
Dallas moneyline
UNDER 6 — slight lean
Player prop watch: Jason Robertson OVER 3.5 shots.
Anaheim Ducks at Vegas Golden Knights
10:00 PM ET | T-Mobile Arena
This is one of Friday’s clearer roster mismatches.
Anaheim is without Troy Terry, who has been placed on injured reserve with a hip injury.
Vegas can roll out a top power-play group featuring Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner, Mark Stone, Tomas Hertl and Shea Theodore.
That’s a lot of puck possession and playmaking for Anaheim to handle on the road.
Leo Carlsson remains the Anaheim player to watch. He generated four shots and an assist in his previous outing, and Terry’s absence should increase the importance of Carlsson’s offensive workload.
Game leans:
Vegas moneyline
Vegas team total OVER
Player props:
Jack Eichel point — OVER 0.5
Leo Carlsson shots OVER — line dependent
🏀 WNBA PLAYOFFS — WINNER TAKE ALL
Dallas Wings at Golden State Valkyries — Game 3
9:00 PM ET | ESPN2 | Chase Center
Series tied 1-1. Winner advances to face Las Vegas.
This is the game of the night.
Game 1 belonged completely to Golden State, 104-80.
Game 2 became an entirely different basketball game.
Dallas won 108-100 in overtime behind an historic performance from Arike Ogunbowale, who scored 45 points — a new WNBA playoff record — while shooting 12-of-23, making five threes and adding seven rebounds.
Gabby Williams answered with 36 points for Golden State.
But Game 3 creates an interesting chess match.
Golden State concentrated heavily on Paige Bueckers in Game 2. Ogunbowale punished that strategy.
Now Golden State must decide how aggressively it wants to adjust toward Arike without giving Bueckers better opportunities.
That’s why Bueckers may be one of the most interesting players on tonight’s board.
Current market numbers have Golden State around -7.5 to -8, with the total approximately 157.5.
The Regression Question
We shouldn’t automatically expect another 45 from Ogunbowale.
Likewise, Golden State shouldn’t expect another 36-point explosion from Williams.
That makes complementary production — rebounding, assists, second-chance points and bench scoring — especially important.
Veterans have already swung this series. Tiffany Hayes scored 21 off Golden State’s bench in Game 1, while Alysha Clark answered with 21 for Dallas in Game 2.
Most Interesting Player Props
Paige Bueckers OVER 4.5 assists
Current projection models have Bueckers around 5.4 assists against a 4.5 line.
If Golden State continues sending defensive attention toward Dallas’ primary scorers, Bueckers’ playmaking opportunities should remain available.
Jessica Shepard OVER 9.5 rebounds — if available
One current model projects Shepard around 11.2 rebounds.
Gabby Williams UNDER 2.5 made threes
Williams exploded offensively in Game 2, but repeating that exact shooting profile is difficult. One current model projects approximately 1.6 made threes.
Arike Ogunbowale OVER 1.5 made threes
After going 5-of-8 from deep in Game 2, the market has adjusted expectations — but a 1.5 threshold still gives an aggressive perimeter scorer multiple paths to two makes.
Game Prediction
Golden State’s biggest advantages are home court, defensive versatility and the ability to make a meaningful adjustment after watching Ogunbowale destroy its Game 2 coverage.
Dallas’ advantage is different: it now knows it can win the game late.
That makes eight points feel significant for an elimination game.
Game leans:
Dallas +8
Golden State moneyline
UNDER 165 — slight lean
Best player angles:
Paige Bueckers OVER 4.5 assists
Jessica Shepard OVER 9.5 rebounds
Arike Ogunbowale OVER 1.5 threes

Virginia Tech ML
Carolina Hurricanes ML
Dallas Stars ML
Vegas Golden Knights ML
Dallas Wings +8
The key to Friday’s board isn’t necessarily predicting every outright winner. The better opportunities may come from identifying how the games are most likely to be played.
Penn State–Northwestern projects as a slower Big Ten game. Liberty’s defense gets a favorable matchup against a Delaware offense dealing with quarterback uncertainty. Detroit must open without Dylan Larkin. Vegas owns the deeper offensive lineup against an Anaheim team missing Troy Terry. And in San Francisco, the market is asking Dallas to stay within roughly eight points only two nights after the Wings proved they can beat Golden State outright.
Those are the situations worth watching.
