Sports cards aren’t the only collectibles getting serious attention.
The first week of September brought a packed schedule of major coin and currency auctions, putting everything from rare U.S. coins and National Bank Notes to error notes, colonial currency and world paper money in front of collectors.
And one tiny dime showed exactly how far the rare-money market can go.
A Dime Worth $1.25 Million
The headline sale came September 1.
An 1894-S Barber dime sold for $1,250,500 at a Stack’s Bowers auction.
Yes—a dime.
Only 24 were originally minted, and just nine are currently known to survive. That combination of rarity, history and collector demand has made the 1894-S one of the legendary coins in American numismatics. (People.com)
It also provides a perfect example of an important collecting lesson:
Face value and collectible value are two completely different things.
Ten cents became more than $1.2 million because collectors weren’t buying the denomination.
They were buying the rarity.
💵 Paper Money Had Its Moment Too
Coins weren’t the whole story.
Stack’s Bowers held a dedicated U.S. currency session on September 2 covering:
Colonial notes • Continental currency • Obsolete notes • Confederate currency • Fractional currency • National Bank Notes • Large-size notes • Small-size notes • Error notes
The week culminated with a dedicated U.S. Currency Rarities Night on September 4. (Collectors Corner)
That’s exactly the part of the hobby BuckBully finds interesting.
A $1, $5, $10 or $20 bill doesn’t necessarily stop being worth its printed denomination just because it left circulation.
Series, condition, rarity, serial numbers, printing errors, signatures, seals and issuing banks can all matter.
🌎 Rare Money Goes Beyond the U.S.
Currency collecting is global.
Stack’s Bowers looks to hold U.S. sessions with major World Paper Money auctions on September 5 and 6, while Heritage held its own World Paper Money Select Auction on September 1. (Heritage Auctions)
That means collectors were bidding across multiple corners of the hobby in the same week.
Old American notes.
World currency.
Colonial money.
Coins.
Errors.
Banknotes.
For BuckBully, that’s an important distinction:
Money can be currency, history and a collectible at the same time.
🪙 Why Rare Money Is Different
Currency collecting has something other collectibles can’t completely duplicate.
The object itself once functioned as money.
A century-old banknote wasn’t originally created as a collectible. Somebody may have been paid with it, saved it, spent it or carried it around in their pocket.
Coins can tell the same story.
That gives collectors several things to chase simultaneously:
Rarity + Condition + History + Design + Errors + Precious-metal content + Provenance
And sometimes the smallest detail makes the biggest difference.
A mint mark.
A star.
A strange serial number.
A printing mistake.
A particular issuing bank.
Or simply an extremely low surviving population.
Don’t Assume Old Means Valuable
Here’s the other side of the hobby.
Finding an old bill in a drawer doesn’t automatically mean you’ve hit the jackpot.
Millions of older coins and notes survive.
Some are worth only a modest premium over face value.
Others can be worth hundreds, thousands—or, in exceptional cases, seven figures.
That’s why identification comes first.
Before deciding what something is worth, collectors should determine exactly what they have.
🐂 The BuckBully Take
The $1.25 million Barber dime grabs the headline, but the bigger story is the size and variety of the rare-money hobby.
Collectors aren’t chasing only gold and silver.
They’re chasing history.
They’re looking for notes that survived generations, coins with tiny mintages, printing mistakes that weren’t supposed to escape the press and pieces connected to particular places and moments in time.
That’s also why we’d never recommend judging collectible money solely by age.
Instead, look at:
Rarity. Condition. Authentication. Variety. Serial numbers. Mint marks. Errors. Provenance. Collector demand.
The treasure isn’t always obvious.
Sometimes it’s a million-dollar dime.
Sometimes it’s an unusual bill sitting unnoticed in someone’s collection.
And sometimes the fun is simply discovering the story behind the money.
Check your change. Check your bills. Know what you own.
Collect the history. Know the value. Be Bullish On What You Value. 🐂
