Why wait until the playoffs to pick a champion?
Futures betting is about looking months ahead and asking two questions: Who can actually win—and is the price worth the risk?
With the NFL kicking off, MLB entering the stretch run, the WNBA title race heating up, and new NBA and NHL seasons approaching, here’s the BuckBully futures board.
🏈 NFL: Baltimore Offers an Interesting Middle Ground
The Rams enter the season as the clear Super Bowl favorite, around +500 to +550. Buffalo and Baltimore sit in the next tier, while Chicago is way down the board around +2400 to +2500. (BetFirm)
That creates three very different plays:
Safe-ish: Rams
BuckBully Value Watch: Ravens
Long-shot: Bears 🐻
Baltimore doesn’t have the shortest odds, but that’s exactly what makes the Ravens interesting. They don’t have to be the favorite—they just have to have a better chance than their price suggests.
And Chicago? That’s the fun ticket. At roughly 25-to-1, nobody should confuse the Bears with the safest pick on the board.
But if they make a serious jump, that ticket becomes a lot more interesting.
⚾ MLB: Pay for the Dodgers—or Take a Swing?
September baseball changes futures betting.
The Dodgers are an enormous favorite at roughly +180, followed by Milwaukee around +750, the Yankees +800, Philadelphia/Tampa Bay around +1100 and Atlanta around +1300 in recently posted markets. (MLB.com)
The question isn’t whether Los Angeles is good.
It’s whether +180 is good enough.
For more payout:
🐂 Yankees — +800 range
🎯 Braves — +1300 range
The Dodgers are the safer answer. The Yankees and Braves are the more interesting risk/reward conversation.
🏀 WNBA: Minnesota vs. Everybody
Minnesota has separated itself enough that sportsbooks have moved the Lynx to odds-on championship favorites. Las Vegas remains one of the primary challengers. (ESPN.com)
That’s where futures become fun.
Would you rather risk more money on the team everybody expects to win—or get a much larger return betting that another contender knocks them out?
Favorite: Lynx
Value Watch: Aces
Upside swing: Fever
In a playoff format, even the best team still has to survive the bracket.
🏀 NBA: The Young Giants Are Coming
This might be the most interesting futures market of all.
The Spurs and Thunder are currently co-favorites around +260 in some markets, with the defending champion Knicks farther back around +800. (bet365 News)
Think about what that says.
The market isn’t simply betting on what happened last season. It’s pricing what it believes happens next.
San Antonio and Oklahoma City have young superstar cores capable of dominating for years, while New York has already demonstrated it can finish the job.
🐂 Favorite: Spurs / Thunder
💰 Value Watch: Knicks
🎲 Longer shot: Nuggets
NBA division futures may be even more interesting. For example, one current market has New York favored in the Atlantic but still offering roughly decimal 2.65—about +165 in American odds. (PartyPoker)
That’s the type of market worth comparing with championship odds.
🏒 NHL: Don’t Automatically Follow the Favorite
Hockey might be the hardest major sport to predict months ahead.
That’s also what makes Stanley Cup futures interesting.
Current markets have Florida and Colorado among the shortest-priced teams, while the NHL’s championship picture remains relatively open compared with some other sports. (Sports Betting Dime)
BuckBully Watch: Avalanche.
A dominant regular season doesn’t guarantee anything once playoff hockey starts. Goaltending, injuries and one hot opponent can completely change a series.
With the season still ahead, this is one market where patience—and shopping for the best number—can make sense.
🐂 The BuckBully Futures Board
If we had to circle one team from each league today:
🏈 NFL — Baltimore Ravens
⚾ MLB — New York Yankees
🏀 WNBA — Las Vegas Aces
🏀 NBA — New York Knicks for value; Spurs/Thunder as favorites
🏒 NHL — Colorado Avalanche
But here’s the important part:
Don’t just bet the team. Bet the price.
If you believe a team has roughly a 10% chance of winning a championship but the sportsbook is offering odds implying only a 5% chance, that’s interesting.
If everybody loves the same team and the price gets crushed?
Maybe the best bet is no bet at all.
That’s the difference between asking “Who will win?” and “Who’s worth betting?”
And futures are much more fun when your 15-to-1 ticket is still alive when the playoffs arrive.
Know the odds. Find the value. Enjoy the ride. 🐂
